He was trained as a service dog for disabled people whose disability could not be seen most of the time even by members of Rosina’s immediate family and friends. He was very good at sensing that something was wrong and would bring it to Rosina’s attention and help her deal with it. Tamarr was so sensitive to the aurora put off by an individual that he took it upon himself to even support family members who he loved. This happened two successive days with me and he stayed by my side until I worked through the issue and my unseen stress had dissipated. Stress, which I did not know, and that even (my wife) had not recognized in me.

| I think quite often our closest animal friends are more reliable and better at it than our people friends, and I mean that in a very believing kind of way. Their loyalty is without question or compromise, even when in pain. I could see it in his behavior at the reunion, because he clearly wanted to be interacting with all the activity around him.
Your dad suggested that Tamarr perhaps had been unwilling to give up his responsibility until Merlyn arrived on the scene and could be acknowledged as the one who could carry on in his place. That’s not just an artificial human suggestion; there isn’t a purer Canine social structure to observe than that of North America’s wolves, because they have such an intricate and interdependent culture of behaviors and relationships, which I’ve read a great deal about. And the beauty of it is that their loyalties can occasionally transcend species–– “Dances with Wolves” projected that as a thread that stitched the elements of a remarkable story of social relationships together, even when they seemed so unlikely. Tamarr’s loyalty to you was no accident of fate, it was natural for both of you and drew its strength from the best each of you could give to the other. The loyalty, the companionship, the compassion–– it was all part of what each of you needed, and in the human perception of such a relationship… that’s nothing less than love–– and the very best kind. I’m sorry Tamarr’s physical presence is gone from your life because of the sadness his departure will produce, but I know he will never be gone from your heart. And that’s all the more reason to give Merlyn every opportunity to be the best of himself in the way Tamarr was. He will be Tamarr’s shadow in your life, and you will see and experience Tamarr again in what Merlyn becomes through your dedication to his development. Take care of yourself Rosina… be proud of these memories that seem painful for the moment. It’s the longer story that matters the most, and you did well by him just as he did well by you.
